Born To Lie . . .: Paul Joseph Watson and the Claim that Conservatism is the New Punk Rock

During the ‘Great Lockdown of 2020’ Miles Beta has time enough on his hands and finds himself inspired after reading, “WOKE: A Guide to Social Justice by Titania McGrath”. Despite the fact that he is a generation or more her senior, he feels a deep kinship with her and the bravery she exhibits in defending the down-trodden people of colour, members of the LGBTQ+ community, women in general, animals, Mother Nature and EARTH herself, from the oppressive white patriarchy. Miles has been a punk since the 70’s and lives in West Yorkshire with his longtime plus-sized friend, Periwinkle, who despite not being a big believer in biological sex, is in the process of transitioning from male to female. Their primary irritant for the past three years (a subject frequently tossed about around the kitchen table over humus on toast and a bottle or two of elderberry wine) has been a tweet by Paul Joseph Watson, the Far-Right English conspiracy theorist who works for Alex Jones’ website Infowars, which is notable for spreading fake news. Back in early February of 2017, Watson Tweeted: ‘Conservatism is the new counter-culture. Conservatism is the new punk rock’, and urged his followers to retweet because in his words, it really annoys leftists. Miles firmly believes that punk is NOT conservative and nor, in the United States, does punk have anything to do with the Republican Party: Punk everywhere on earth is WOKE! For the most part. Punks have been awake to Social Injustice for decades, a fact that he aims to outline, by referencing from punk sources, so that the GAMMON of this globe are no longer able to claim ownership of punk identity. The very idea that he has lived as an unemployed anarcho-punk for the past four decades in order to avoid being a ‘wage slave’ and to defend those at the bottom of society, only to have a capitalist exploit his identity is more than he can tolerate. And so, locked down in Northern England, Miles sets out to set the record straight, only to come face to face with one derisory niggling doubt. (fiction/satire)
