From where she stood she could see the entire floor of the grocery store. Several people were still shopping while others were coming to pay for their items.She looked behind and could see a long sea of heads. She wondered why there were so many people.“Can’t we move a little faster?” someone shouted in front of her. She looked at the person and took in the faded jeans and worn tee shirt that he wore. His hair was dyed blue and he had on dangling earrings on both ears. On the exposed part of his forearms were tattoos made with multiple colors and shapes. There were bogus rings on some of his fingers and all of his fingernails were painted in different colors. On his feet were flip flops that revealed that he had well-manicured nails that were equally painted in multiple colors like his fingernails. “Yo, cashier,” the man called again. “Can you hear me at all? Can’t you be a bit faster? We don’t have all day to spend.”She felt her skin cringe. What was wrong with him. There were just three people in front of him and yet he was being so impatient.“Cashier? Cashier?” he called again. This time others glared at him. But he didn’t care. “Cashier, I am talking to you.”The cashier, a young woman in a red and white uniform, looked at him. “Yes, sir?”“Don’t sir me,” the man fired back. “Do your work quickly and let us all get out of here.”“I am doing my work, sir,” she said politely. “I would soon be with you.”“I don’t want soon, okay? I want to be attended to now.”“I am sorry, but you would have to wait for your turn, sir.”“And I don’t want to wait anymore, cashier,” he said. “Why not attend to me right now?”The woman behind him felt hot behind her neck. He turned around again, this time with a scowl on his face. “What is it?”“I want to implore you to leave the cashier alone.”“Are you her mother or what?”She smiled. “I am not.”“Then who the hell are you?”“A customer. Just like you. And I am concerned that the more you distract her the more we all would be delayed. That is why I am asking you to back down and leave her alone. Okay?”
