本の説明

Millions of students in educational institutions face difficult challenges because of their social background such as ethnicity and social class being labelled as ‘inferior’ by society, thus inevitably transmitting onto teachers and fellow classmates. Although students are most likely experiencing hardship outside of school, placing them into a system that continues to reinforce this divisive mentality only makes those from less advantaged backgrounds have an even harder time trying to achieve success in their educational career. In this book, deep insights and personal experiences from the author is provided. The short novel has used real events from his life intertwined with the tough experiences in education, giving a story that has been emphasised in order to highlight the real-life struggles of those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The intertwining nature of this novel offers you with a contrasting view to the reality of the educational system from a different perspective and challenges the existing paradigms of our current reality. With the author’s own story of being a mixed-race person, living in Japanese and British society, transferring schools and working his way up into university, a compelling story is showcased. Presenting questions throughout the novel, it allows you to better understand the need for certain discussions society tends to dismiss or quickly label as inconsequentialIn this book, you will learn about:•The difference between Japan and England in relation to society and culture•What it is like to grow up as a ‘Hafu’ (Half Japanese and Half foreign) in Japan and in England•What it is like attending school in Japan and how this contrasts with English schools•The challenges of relocating countries and starting a new life•Personal struggles with maintaining friendships•The differences in teachers in how they impact on learning – bringing in Becker’s labelling theory•The struggles of being labelled as ‘working-class’•The struggles of being labelled as an ‘ethnic minority’•The impact personal matters have on school life•The experiences of being a university student•The need to end elitism•Spiritual and Psychological ideas•The hypocrisy of politicians and proposing political changes•Contradictive reality of scientific materialism and religionRobert Oliver is a university student who has studied sociology since his interest from studying it at sixth form college. Acquiring a sophisticated understanding into the different cultural reality of Japanese and English society, along with an interest in educational and societal development, he has written this book as a personal project to highlight some of the immense struggles he has faced. With the combined hardship resulting from uncontrollable matters such as race and the automatic assumption of his social class, he has decided to intertwine the subjective real-life experiences of his own struggles and incorporate them into the short novel. Robert has managed to capture the seemingly common, yet hardly recognised difficulties with life in and out of school in today’s society.
