Tokyo is full of the structural technology! Tokyo, the largest city in this nation of earthquakes, has by far the greatest number of buildings than any other place in the country. Structural Design Map Tokyo is an architectural guidebook created with a focus on these buildings' structural designs. It has been one of the bestsellers on bookstore and Amazon since its publication in 2014. Unlike many architectural guidebooks you see in a bookstore, Structural Design Map Tokyo looks at the city's buildings from a structural engineering point of view, asking the question, “Which building has the most interesting structural design?" The professionals in Japan's architectural industry and visitors from overseas use this book to navigate the vast sea of buildings in Tokyo. The English version of the book is being published this fall. Thirty buildings among those listed in the Japanese version have been selected for the English version. In addition, the book also contains six newly completed projects, including the facilities for Tokyo Olympics 2020 (such as the Japan National Stadium and Ariake Arena) and a new terminal building at Tokyo International Airport completed in 2020. Each structural system of the 36 buildings is illustrated with visual references, including sections and structural detail drawings. One of the special features, “High-rises, Seismic retrofit: High-rise Blocks in Shinjuku," describes the most recent case of seismic retrofit applications, which took place in the western area of Shinjuku where many 1970's high-rises still stand. It also introduces some of the landmark high-rises in the area, such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower. Another feature titled “Bridge Cruise in Tokyo Bay & Sumida River" takes a deep look into the bridges along the Sumida River. You'll encounter these bridges on the upstream cruise departing from the bay area, which has been developing faster than any other area in Tokyo.
